Cashmere

Cashmere Knitwear at Max

Cashmere is the softest fibre most of us will ever wear, and it's warm out of proportion to its weight — which is why a fine cashmere knit beats a thick wool one on a cold morning. Our cashmere knitwear spans sweaters, cardigans, knit tees and vests, plus scarves, beanies and gloves. Browse the rest of our knitwear, or our merino range for everyday layering.

Cashmere Blend and Cotton Cashmere

Our Cashmere Blend pieces pair cashmere with merino wool — warmer, more durable and better at holding their shape than cashmere alone, which makes them the ones to reach for in deep winter. Our Cotton Cashmere line blends cotton with cashmere for a lighter, cooler knit that carries through spring and into summer evenings. Both keep the softness cashmere is known for; the difference is weight and season.

Recycled Cashmere

Our Cashmere Blend knitwear uses recycled cashmere. Recycled cashmere is reclaimed from existing garments and yarn waste, then re-spun, so the fibre gets a second life with no loss in softness. You'll see it named in the composition on each product page.

Cashmere Sweaters, Cardigans and Tops

You'll find V neck and crew neck sweaters, cardigans in cropped and longline shapes, short-sleeve knit tees and sleeveless knit vests. If you want one piece to start with, a V neck cashmere blend sweater in a neutral is the most useful — it layers under a blazer, over a shirt, or on its own, and it works three seasons out of four.

Pure Cashmere and Cashmere Blends

Pure cashmere is the softest and lightest option, and the most delicate — it pills more readily and needs gentler handling. Blending cashmere with merino or cotton trades a little of that softness for knits that hold their shape longer, pill less and cost considerably less. If you've had a pure cashmere jumper lose its shape after a season, a blend is the practical answer.

Cashmere Accessories

The collection also includes cashmere blend scarves, beanies and fingerless gloves — the easiest way to add a considered accessory to your outfit, and the pieces that make the most difference on a cold morning.

Looking After Cashmere Blend Knitwear

Wash cold by hand, use a wool-safe detergent, and dry flat rather than hanging so the weight of the water doesn't stretch it. Never tumble dry. Fold rather than hang in the wardrobe. Blends pill less than pure cashmere, but if it happens, a sweater stone lifts it off easily. Always check the care label on your piece.

Cashmere FAQs

Close, and for most New Zealand winters the difference isn't noticeable. Cashmere's warmth comes from how fine and hollow the fibres are, and a blend keeps most of that while adding durability from the cotton or merino it's spun with. A merino cashmere blend is warmer than a cotton cashmere one.

Some pilling is normal in any soft knit and isn't a sign of poor quality — it's loose surface fibres working their way out, and it usually settles after the first few wears. Pure cashmere pills more readily than a blend. A cashmere comb or fabric shaver or sweater stone removes it in a minute. It happens most where there's friction: under arms, and where a bag strap sits.

Cold hand wash with a wool-safe detergent. Press the water out rather than wringing, then dry flat on a towel away from direct sun. Don't tumble dry and don't hang it wet. Washing is actually better for cashmere than dry cleaning, and the fibre softens each time. Always check your garment's care label first.

Cotton cashmere blends and short-sleeve cashmere knit tees work well through spring and into summer evenings — light enough not to overheat, but warmer than a cotton tee when the temperature drops. Fine-gauge V necks are the other transeasonal option.
